Why Choose Us?

As someone with diabetes or pre-diabetes, you may have been referred to a dietitian in the past for education about what to eat. You may be wondering what is different about us and about our Eat to Beat Diabetes program. You are likely questioning whether we can help you. These are all important things to consider.

So why should you choose us?

We don't believe in a 'one size fits all' approach

Over 30 years ago the first set of Dietary Guidelines were introduced in Australia and other countries. These guidelines contained recommendations to reduce fat intake and eat plenty of grains and other high-carbohydrate foods throughout the day. Although the guidelines specified that these recommendations were for healthy people, many dietitians and diabetes educators began prescribing low-fat, high-carb diets for patients with diabetes as well. Most continue to do so today. Unfortunately, this way of eating doesn’t work for a great many people, in particular those with diabetes, insulin resistance and who struggle with their weight.

We're evidence-based. We’ve done the research

Over the past 15 years, there have been many studies conducted on carbohydrate restriction that demonstrate its effectiveness for controlling blood glucose levels and obesity. Our program is different than most because it addresses the underlying causes of type 2 diabetes: carbohydrate intolerance and insulin resistance.

We're ahead of our time

In October of 2013, the American Diabetes Association issued a position statement on nutrition recommendations for people with diabetes in which lower-carbohydrate diets were identified as one of several eating patterns that can be used for diabetes management. All signs indicate that carbohydrate-restricted diets will soon be viewed as the norm for people with diabetes and pre-diabetes, and we've already experienced great results with our clients using this approach.

We favor a balanced, personalized approach and disagree with labeling certain foods as 'bad'

Many programs can’t be sustained long term due to being too restrictive. The Eat to Beat Diabetes program offers the ability to create a way of eating that is uniquely suited to your preferences, lifestyle, and goals. Although our plan is lower in carbohydrates overall, you can still enjoy the foods you love once you learn how to consume them in a way that works for your body. It's not just about blood sugar levels and 'beating' diabetes – equally important is our enjoyment of food and quality of life.
